History

In 1945, a group of area business owners pooled their resources together to establish a bank in Stuart, Nebraska.

At the recommendation of then-Governor Dwight Griswold, the group partnered with Rushville Banker-Attorney Joseph G. Brewster and his wife, Vera, to own and manage the newly formed institution, The Tri-County Bank (TCB). In 1967, bank management transitioned to Donald and Sally (Brewster) Schmaderer, who purchased the bank in 1979.

In 1968, Joe and Vera purchased the Butte State Bank.  Dennis and Jane Brewster managed the bank and then purchased it in 1979.  Craig and Tammy Brewster returned to the area in 1989 to manage the bank, and they purchased it in 1999.

In 2026, The Tri-County Bank acquired Butte State Bank and merged operations under the TCB name.  The bank is currently owned and operated by the family’s third and fourth generation of community bankers. Jon Schmaderer (President & CEO), Nancy Steinhauser (Chief Risk Officer), Joel Steinhauser (Chief Operations Officer), Tate Schmaderer (Ag & Business Banking Manager), and Claire Steinhauser (Operations Assistant) all serve critical roles in the bank’s day-to-day management.

TCB directly serves North Central, Nebraska and South Central, South Dakota with offices in Stuart, Atkinson, Bassett, O’Neill, Butte, and Spencer.
